Baltic interactions: baltic peoples were most concerned. The wendish crusade 1147-1185: pope eugenius iii issued a bull calling for crusades against pagan northerns in 1147, bernard of clairvaux defined the objective of the wendish crusades as the conversion of slavic pagans to christianity. The order if the sword brethren of livonia 1202: to ensure a permanent crusading eityt in the baltic region. Lived according to the rule of the templars: mostly immigrant german nobles, with a few livonian members, monk knights. 1210 pope innocent iii decreed that in the future the sword brethren was to retain 1/3 of conquered territory: from this point military orders begin carving out political states in the north.
