The south is going to embrace its version of the gilded age. White supremacists want to go back to the tradition of states rights and white supremacy; to redeem the south. No taxes in the south and very little government services. However, capitalists were yankees and southerners had to convince themselves that this change was good. Placed southerners on the board of directors of companies. South had an advantage in textiles as it had: Worked more and paid less than northern workers. Would take place farther inland; not near the coast. Farmers were not enthusiastic of the new south order. Militant populism also going on in the south as well. Issue of race was larger in the south; troubles experienced by both would not normally bring them together. Temporarily managed to come together on the basis of class. Bi-racial coalition based on frustrations of the new south order. Concern that blacks will no longer show deference to the whites.
