Overt or covert depictions of violence, sex, and drug use encouraged similar behavior in kids. Shopping mall - malls began replacing downtown shopping districts. In the late 1940s and early 1950s most suburban residents needed to visit city centers for major purchases. Suburban consumers were highly desirable for merchandisers because they were home owners, have higher median incomes and high rates of child rearing. Traffic congestion and parking problems discouraged commercial expansion in central business districts of cities.
