KNES 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Myofascial Release, Rectus Femoris Muscle, Myofascial Trigger Point
Document Summary
Range of motion (rom) at a joint. Flexibility: this depends on which joint, each joint has a different rom. Optimal musculoskeletal function requires an adequate rom. Factors affective flexibility: age and activity level, gender and pregnancy. Women tend to be more flexible than men due to anatomical differences. During pregnancy, women become even more flexible. Produce a hormone called relaxin, which cause the muscles to be able to stretch more. During 2nd and 3rd trimesters, even more susceptible to: previous injuries overstretching. Scar tissue can be formed after injury, which can limit the rom: body type and strength training. A balanced strength training program through a full rom will. However, overdeveloped muscles or muscle imbalanced can occur with a poorly designed strength program or lack of concurrent flexibility training. Connective tissue: tendons, ligaments, fascia, is composed of a series of collagen fibers within a protein matrix, it has a high tensile strength (resistant to elongation)
