At rest and during acute exercise can measure it in 3 ways. Can dose individual with this based on their body weight and then the subject collects urine for 24-48 hours. Put it into a machine, mass spectrometer, that can differentiate between this urine and normal urine. Don"t need to reside into a calorimeter: most investigators use this for a reference value. It is the gold standard best way to measure: problem: very expensive. The picture is not a direct calorimeter but it measures the vo2 of person. Equipment used to measure vo@ and co2 prouction in the lab and the field. Metabolic machine that weight 1 lb- strapped around chest and breathing through. Rer, co2 production, and vo2, and pulmonary minute ventilation are measured. Portable vo2 machines can measure sub max and max: can go outside and inside in real world vo2 max test is really only for research, but when more aviaable people can start to use it.
