Behaviorism: the mind is a black box, researchers were interested in the relationship between what went into the box and what come s out (stimulus-response mechanisms) Not concerned with the processes of brain: stimulus that was put in, and then response, but nothing in the brain. Interested in these components, opened the black box to some degree. Not concerned with the movement just the steps leading up to it. Wanted to know what went on in the brain: stimulus identification, response selection, response programming, open loop control. Existence of motor programs in neural impulse form. Interested in neuron system connected to neuromuscular system. A motor program is a pre-structured set of motor commands selected by the cns and sent to the pns: depends on storage in cns and long term memory, commands can by recalled by the storage. The concept of a motor program is couched in information processing and the computer analogy.
