Refers to a pattern of morbidity and/or mortality for a particular group (latinos, immigrants) that at odds with what would be expected given its socioeconomic profile. Typical connection between ses and health outcomes: stepwise pattern as illustrated in whitehall study, we do not always see the connection between them, eg latino population. Compared to white population- they are four times as likely to not finish high school: lower levels of education to general us pop. What are some explanations for this paradox: cultural hypothesis, strong family ties, social capital can be protective to ill health. Inidivudal level processes though which inididuvdals acquire behaviors, attidues and values prevelant in us society: strucual discriminaition. Ideaology, practices, processes, and institutions that operate at macro levels to provuce and reproduce differeneital access to power and life opportunites along the lines of race/ethnicity, gender, social class, sexuality.
