We"re here to cultivate an ethos of criticality. To look beneath the surface to reveal true meaning. Trained as a composer of western classical music in 1950s. Active as a scholar, musician, and promoter of non-western music (first at ucla) Encouraged bi-musicality : being able to play western as well as other kinds of music. Studied flathead indians: early work, montana. Anthropology = study of the development and identity of people(s) over time. Musicology = academic research and study of music apart from performance and theory. Ethnology = study of the development of a particular culture. According to scholars, ethnomusicology should be based on : how music is structured, what behavior produced the music, geography, the study of music in culture . To analyze how music of different cultures/time periods relate.
