People used to assume minds are transparent (you know stuff in the present) Basically, consciousness only but this is wrong. Thanks to freud, we learned that a lot of the mind is based on the unconscious. The mind is like an iceberg with layers. Hadith: the rider (conscious) on the elephant (unconscious) Need to know how the unconscious works and to gain control over it. Socrates: wisdom is knowing what you don"t know. People don"t know their minds as well as they think. Falsey ascribing a though to toneself while being under the impression of introspection. The panty-hose study: people choose from the right side where there were four articles of clothing. They didn"t look at the others and didn"t have a reason why they chose it. Said it looked softer even though they were all the same. Making up reasons of choice-right hand bias. We think answering questions is speaking one"s mind.
