Developed a theoretical picture as to how uranium could fission. With rudi pierels made the first calculations of how much uranium would be needed to make a bomb. Wrote a memo to the government to get the british nuclear weapons program started. Teller and bethe: teller and bethe had very different styles, bethe was meticulous, teller was sloppy, bethe was interested in the big picture and little things, teller really focused on the big ideas. Advantages of using neutrons: neutrons have no charge, and therefore took less energy to get to the center. With protons, you had to overcome the repelling charges: more efficient than using alpha particles. Enrico fermi: italian physicist, many contributions to physics, developed first nuclear reactor. Chicago pile-1: central figures of the manhattan project.
