Document Summary
Even if we face challenges, we will overcome them. Strong emotional reactions subside over time, whereas global cognitive judgements may remain permanently affected by important life events. Ex. stigma against those who have been divorced or never married. Non-neutral set points (not starting from zero), born with temperament. Happiness can change, change is less common than stability. If some people are more adaptive than others, what are they doing/thinking. Surprises, unexpected positive things tend to make people feel really good. Building surprises into relationships breaks routine and adapting to the relationship. Hunting for novelty, look for unfamiliar aspects of a routine activity. Mix up your routine and look for ways to incorporate new things. Positive emotions are not just a goal, but a motivating factor. They broaden our attention to new things we may not have otherwise experienced. Broadening our attention happens more when in a positive mood.
