Presentation types: adhd-pi, adhd-hi primarily symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity. Primarily includes preschoolers, may have limited validity for older children because many age into combined presentation: adhd-c. Associated characteristics: cognitive deficits, speech and language impairments, developmental coordination and tic disorders, medical and physical concerns, social problems, executive functioning deficits. Comorbidity: 80% of kids with adhd have at least one other disorder, odd/cd. Serious outcomes when adhd/cd present: depression/suicide. Impulsivity associated with suicide: ld 50% comorbidity, substance abuse and risky sex. Multifinality: adhd substance abuse, eating disorders, depression/suicide, cd. Biological basis: strong genetic contribution, heritability of 0. 80-0. 85, biological differences in brain structure and function. Adhd not caused by: poor parenting, too much sugar, food additives, allergies, or lead. Executive functioning deficits cognitive processes which activate, integrate, and mange other brain functions. Barkley"s theory behavioral disinhibition is the basis of executive function deficits in adhd. No medical screen, cognitive test, or brain imaging.
