May not appear distressing, but content of distressing dreams. Characteristics of or prior exposure to trauma. Female gender: reactive attachment disorder, disinhibited social engagement disorder. Age: younger children at higher risk for abuse/neglect, older children at higher risk for sexual abuse. Sex: 80% of sexual abuse victims are female, but other than that, boys and girls are victims of maltreatment almost equally. Multiple acts of aggression, including punching/beating/kicking/physically harming child. Injuries are result of discipline or severe physical punishment. Physically abused children more disruptive or aggressive. Physical neglect refusal or delay in seeking healthcare, expulsion from home, refusal to allow runaway to return home, abandonment, inadequate supervision. Educational neglect allowing chronic truancy, failing to enroll child in school or failing to attend to special needs. Emotional neglect marked inattention to child"s needs for affection, refusal or failure to provide needed psychological care, spousal abuse in presence of child, allowing child to use drugs/alcohol.
