PSYC 334 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Phillip Buchanon, Positive Illusions, Physical Attractiveness
Document Summary
Successful relationships entail the mutual exchange of desirable rewards with others. The outcome of an interaction is its net profit or loss. High outcome is a lot of rewards compared to costs and vice versa. Just knowing the outcome level does not tell you how satisfying or stable the relationship is, it is not enough. This is because it depends on what you expect. What we expect and feel we deserve in our dealings with others. Cl is part of your schema of relationship type. If outcome is above cl you are satisfied. The outcomes we (think we) can get elsewhere. Lowest level of outcomes we will accept from our current partners. Includes both the costs of leaving and the rewards offered by others. Investments: the things we lose when a relationship ends. Interdependence theory says there are only certain events that will lead you to evaluate your relationship like this (cl, clalt, outcomes)
