Stereotypes widely held beliefs about members of a group: comes from: Stereotype threat source of stress arising from the risk of personally confirming a negative stereotype about one"s group. Person begins to expend energy to cope with stress: reduced working memory capacity, biological markers of stress (e. g. ; increased heart rate) Examples in literature: math and driving skills of diverse women, academic performance. Black people, latinx people, low ses background: athletic performance of white people, gay men childcare abilities. Disengagement and disidentification: disengagement when stereotype threat leads people to distance themselves from a threatening domain in short- term. Allows person to maintain positive view about self (e. g. ; something is wrong with the test, not me: disidentification when stereotype threat leads people to avoid a domain/detach from it completely. Might distance self from one"s stereotyped groups. Reframe task: remove items that make identity salient, remind test takers of fairness of study. Remind test-takers of unique/valued traits: increase self-complexity and self-affirmation.
