I. Transtheoretical Model of Change
A. Definition: offers an “integrative framework for understanding and intervening with
human intentional behavior and change”
B. Processes of chance
1. Info:
a) Entail how people go about change
b) In 18 forms of psychotherapy, 10 mechanisms of change were identified
c) Internal and external experiences/activities that enable people to change
2. Cognitive/experiential processes
a) Consciousness raising
(1) Gaining info that increases awareness about behavior pattern or new behavior
(2) Can be from reading material or reflecting
(3) EX) info on long term effects of a specific drug
b) Self-reevaluation
(1) Seeing and evaluating how the status quo or new behavior fits/conflicts with
values
(2) Stop and think about behavior and its consequences and if it matches with
who they want to be
(3) EX) Thinking about lying to family and stealing from them
c) Environmental re-evaluation
(1) Recognizing effects (+/-) of the status quo or that new behavior has on others/
environment
(2) How it hurts others/surroundings
(3) EX) drunk driving
d) Emotional arousal (dramatic relief)
(1) Experiencing emotional reactions about status quo or new behavior
(2) EX) feeling sad or scared about putting self in danger
e) Social liberation
(1) Developing awareness of societal values and promotion of the behavior
(2) Motivation comes from the way society limits addictions (e.g. policy change)-
possible double-edged sword
(3) EX) policy around marijuana, cigarette smoking
