I. Relapse
A. What factors are associated with relapse?
1. Abstinence doesn’t guarantee improvement in social, occupational, etc functioning
2. Relapse rates (12 mo. post treatment) following alcohol and tobacco cessation
~80-90%
B. Warning signs
1. Stop taking medications
2. Around high-risk people
3. Cravings
4. Romanticizing use
5. Uncomfortable thoughts/emotions
6. Withdraw/isolation from others
7. Angry outbursts
C. Pro-lapse vs. re-lapse
1. Prolapse: may have a setback, but it doesn’t undo the work done/progress made
2. Relapse: revert back to behavior; usually guilt associated
