PSYC 479 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: The Strongest, Psychopathology, Life Satisfaction
Document Summary
Emotion and motivation are linked, emotion inspires some type of change. The idea that emotions are separate from your rational side, but this isn"t true. Arise from mental states, interactions, even muscular movement. Nothing in nature has an inherent emotional quality. Ex: the sunset isn"t inherently pleasant, we find it pleasant because of how we process it. Focus on reduction for its own sake is wrong! Not the enemy, and it is unwise to believe so. We need these emotions to alarm us of bad situations. Ex: we feel pain when we touch a hot stove. Basic emotions - happy, sad, fear, anger, surprise, disgust. Being born with these evolutionary tools are very useful. You can go anywhere in the world and undertand the emotions being shown. Chronic experience is problematic and indicative of mental illnesses/disorders like psychopathology. Negative emotions involve the emotions prompting us to a goal, while positive emotions are the result of a goal.
