Small groups of instruments that are being highlighted. Hearing starts and stops with short phrases. Both presentational but balinese gamelan is a different type of presentational. Dutch colonialism in bali during 1800s: before that they were very similar: both played during religious cycles/festivals, no functioning gamelan orchestra because the royal court killed themselves. Became secular- main reason is not for religious functions but for attracting tourists which made it more presentational and more technical. Dutch wanted to promote tourism in the 1920s to counter negative public image: promoting exoticism. Flowers are huge part of bali culture. 1949- indonesia gained independence but continued to promote. Bali as an exotic island: people desire cultural authenticity which promotes cultural change (paradox for cultural tourism)
