HETEROSEXISM AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS 10/17/2012 Homophobia/Biphobia: The fear, hatred, or intolerance of lesbian, gay or bisexual people. Transsexual: A person who alters their body through surgery or hormonal treatments to live as another gender or sex. Queer: An umbrella term used by some lesbian, gay, and bisexual people to refer to themselves, often to avoid  binary and static conceptions of sex, gender, and sexuality.  Transgender: A person whose self definition challenged and disrupts traditional binary conceptions and boundaries of  gender and sexuality.  Sexual Orientation:  Emotional and sexual attractions toward someone of another sex, same sex­ or any sex.  Heterosexism A system of power that privileges heterosexuals.  Attitudes and policies that discriminate against people on the basis of their sexual orientation.
