SOCY 105 Lecture 2: socy unequal childhood reading notes
Document Summary
Concerted cultivation: when children engage in conversation with parents: very involved in children"s growth, creates a sense of entitlement in middle class children, two different kinds of play: middle class=structured, working class=free and childlike. Preparing kids for two different kinds of lives. Kids who just play are playing with close friends and family and kids who are playing structurally are exposed to new people like adults and getting sense of how world works in adult ways. For lower class, style of rearing children at institutions like school differs greatly than rearing at home. People who think they deserve things often end up getting them: lower class kids are learning they are part of the hierarchy where they are. Biggest gaps not in social classes, but across them. Transfer of differential advantages led to larger vocabularies, more comfort with authority figures, and more familiarity in abstract concepts for middle class children.
