Social deviance is the transgression of socially established norms (breaking the rules by which most people abide) Formal deviance/crime- violation of laws enacted by society. Deviance can be blatant rule-breaking or lawlessness or it could be more subtle. Deviance can be a powerful label that is capable of reproducing the social inequalities that punishment id often supposed to correct. Social cohesion- the way people form social bonds, relate to each other and get along on a day- to-day basis. Two ways society can hold together and cohere-mechanical and organic solidarity. Mechanical or segmental solidarity- characterized premodern society-was based on the sameness of individual parts. Collective conscious- the common faith or set of social norms by which a society and its members abide: creates a sense of moral unity. Rehabilitative- the response is designed to transform the offender into a productive member of society. Restitutive- punishments that attempt to restore the status quo that existed prior to an offense or event.
