ARH 132 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Tenebrism, Aerial Perspective, Chiaroscuro
Document Summary
Council of trent began counter-revolution to counter protestantism: wanted to reject mannerism and realistic naturalism. Didn"t want idealized figures from high renaissance. Calling of st. matthew: believable sense of size, tenebrism and chiaroscuro. Dark, dark background: light creates a diagonal leading to a figure, figure on right is jesus with light halo, depicts the moment of recognition and we will see this during baroque, arm gesture on right referencing michelangelo. Conversion of st. paul: tenebrism, zig zag diagonal arrangement, dramatic, less figures to make it more believable, putting figures very close to frame to create emotion. Entombment: no aerial perspective when using tenebrism, figures close to foreground as normal, virgin mary and other characters very realistic. Different mary depiction than we saw from pieta by michelangelo: dynamic composition and reduced # of figures, rotation of tomb and elbow seems to poke through canvas. Classicizing tendency arose during this time period as well: carracci did this.
