Study gentian species: all related genealogically over many generations. This similarity is at heart of evolutionary biology. Note that gentianopsis holopetala is in italics: refers to the actual species scientific name. Searched for plants in great basin region. Note that very flat valleys indicate a lake many years prior. Could test for this by looking for fossils. Indicates that we can use today"s evidence to make hypotheses about past. Historically, great basin was covered with lakes; area was lush and moist. No more gentians here because it is not too dry. Now gentians are at top of mountains where it is still. Disjunction: species range is split into bits; not a continuous geographic range cool/moist. Only found in one area of nv. Can use dna evidence to infer phylogeny: ancestral relationships. Chapter 1 of the textbook: intro to the entire study of biology. Organism"s adaptation to environment= result of evolution. Evolution: process of change that has transformed life on earth.
