Every generation, not all survive (individuals with certain traits eliminated) Example: dark beetles surviving because bird cannot see them as well to eat them. So, dark beetles keep reproducing and frequency of dark beetles. A process that can explain adaptation of organisms in environment. Example: bat wings are example of adaptation. Natural selection is mechanism for descent with modification. Unity in diversity arises from descent with modification. Ex: similar structures in arms of human, cat, whale, bat . Can show with a tree diagram: phylogeny or cladogram. Tree diagram is a hypothesis about the past. Groff definition: one possible answer to a question that scientists ask about the natural world (could be educated guess or causal explanation) Ecology: relationship of organism to its environment. Ex: bird that eat insect has different ecology than bird that eat seed.
