File management environment: each app has a specific data file related to it: data file is a collection of logically related records. Eliminates problems from other methods such as file management systems. Database management systems: data redundancy: same data stored in multiple locations, data isolation: apps cannot access data associated with other applications, data inconsistency: various copies of data that don"t agree, maximize data security, integrity and independence. The world generates exabytes of data per year (1 trillion terabytes) Issues with big data: can come from untrusted sources, big data is dirty, changing, especially in data streams. Nosql databases are useful for big data because they can manipulate structured as well as unstructured data. Allows organizations to conduct experiments: amazon trying new looks for its website= a/b experiment (only 2 outcomes); Etsy web page example with showing additional products. Can analyze more data; rely less on sampling.
