Document Summary
Liquids have indefinite shape and definite volume; moderate intermolecular forces. Solids and definite shape and volume; strong intermolecular forces. In water, when it becomes a solid (freezes), the molecules form pockets in their structure. March 8th-22nd 2017 increasing volume, causing the density to be less than liquid water why ice can float on liquid water. Translation: ability to move in any directions, x y and z. Rotational: ability to reorient the particles direction is space, around an axle. Vibrational: ability to oscillate about a particular point. Have complete freedom of motion; large amount of space between particles. Have some ability to move around, but are still closely packed. Have the ability to flow (limited translational and rotational freedom). Fixed in position, cannot be moved, can only vibrate in position. State of material depends on two major factors; are in constant competition: Amount of energy that a particle has. The more kinetic energy, the more freedom the particles have.
