America and europe at the time of discovery. Native americans used this route to reach the america"s. When they took this trip is unknown, but must"ve been during an ice age. Hunters and gatherers farming developed around 1500 bc. Men : hunting, conducting of war (seasonal) Women : built homes, worked fields, chopped wood, fishing and hauling, as well as childbearing and raising. North: matrilineal, everything passed down through the mother"s side. Never mastered ocean navigation, but europe did. Advances in technology: navigation, gunpowder, and ship building. For wagons that made it down the silk road made profit. Wagons weren"t good enough: couldn"t carry enough, and rarely made it the whole way. Stronger monarchs now had the will to fund voyages. Rivalry between kings and queens/monarchs drove the ships to other land. Portuguese led the way to ocean navigation. Portugal"s coast: atlantic, had to find a different path. 1450- known world was europe, asia, and africa (vaguely aware)
