KIN 155 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Aerobic Exercise, Cardiovascular Disease, Reuptake
Document Summary
Psychosocial stressors: have direct effect on cardiovascular disease and mortality. Social support, mental toughness, socioeconomic status also are factors. Stress directly increase disease, fitness directly decrease. So, stress has direct and indirect effect on disease (multifaceted) New info : depression and physical activity; cognitive ability. Negatively affects how you feel, think, act. Inhibit reuptake of serotonin so that serotonin hits receptors; makes there be enough serotonin in synapse. Depression can be caused by not enough serotonin. A part of addiction: dopamine released when behavior done. Exercise increased dopamine, can be used to treat addiction. Study results: long term impact of exercise vs meds on depression. Exercise more effective than medication or combo of both. Exercise increased coping and motivation; decreases depression. Exercise= increased blood flow/growth factors for brain=better cognitive ability. Repair mechanisms during exercise allow neurons to develop. Bdnf: brain derived neurotrophic factor: haelps brain tissue proliferate and grow. Increase neuroplasticity (connection between tissue), neurogenesis ( formation of tissue)
