US Constitutional Amendments for voting th 15 thAfrican Americans 19 thWomen 26 ­ 18+ 24 ­ no poll tax States still have the powers to make voting laws and they are somewhat different from  state to state In FL, if you ever committed a felony you cannot vote… other states allow you to vote  once out of jail… others allow you to vote while in jail Best turn out for voting is during a Presidential Election and it will not exceed the 50%  range 2008= 56.8% 2006= 37.1% ­> Midterm election 2004= 55.3% 2002= 37% ­> Midterm election What groups in the US vote at a higher rate than others? • The higher the education, the more likely people are to vote • The older the people are, the more likely they are to vote • The higher your income, the more likely you are to vote Voter Registration • Make sure only people who legally should vote, vote • Make sure you only vote one time • Prevent fraud • Easier to register in some places than other places o Here you need to go find somewhere to register o Other places send you a voter card when you are old enough o Other places allow you to register the first time you go to vote o Federal law encouraged states to make voter registration easier • Voters Registration Act of 1993
