Instinct theory: evolutionary theory: when we find frequent behaviors, they are due to instincts. These theories were the first, they gave way to drive theories. Freud"s instincts: eros:life instinct and thanatos: death instinct. These theories also gave way to arousal theories A certain amount of arousal/stimulation is a good thing. Performance increases with medium arousal, but arousal can be too low/too high. Inverted u graph /curvilinear relationship(study diagram on blackboard) Anxiety is not a bad thing, it can motivate us. Arousal can be converted to a motivation to work hard. Hierarchy of needs:pyramid (study on blackboard)know order. Being the best you can be/realize individual potential. Our motivations are taught to us socially. Ex: brother goes to college, you do too. Ex: eating: what you choose to eat. Search for the engram with planaria(small flatworms) 1962. Engram=physical trace of memory (brain, nervous system) If you cut planaria in half, both portions regenerate.
