Military owns 50% of the national budget. American revolution, war of 1812, and civil war, women had to disguise themselves as men to fight. Wwii granted full military status and given some benefits. 1948 women"s armed service integration act: reserved 98% of spots for men, placed caps on term of service, pregnancy was ground of discharge, had to remain ladylike. Up until 60s they were a reserve army. After discharge it was hard to find a job. Dod women can be in any position in january 2013: brass ceiling- women have been excluded from combat roles. Kirstin gillibrand- take sexual assault outside military prosecutors. Claire mccaskill- strip commanders of their ability to overturn jury verdicts and mandate dishonorable discharge. Gender and public office: underrepresented, in 2008 16 out of 193 sovereign states had female heads of government, parliamentary governments. Lowest representation in middle east: reasons. Children learn politics as a masculine activity.
