WGS 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Audre Lorde, Ethnocentrism, Existence Precedes Essence
Document Summary
We consume unhealthy amounts of media everyday. Content shapes our society: brains, lives, emotion. Media: internet, cell phones, tv, movies, magazines. Media limits value and worth: no value put on achievements or intellect. The huge problem is that were taught by media to be sexy, but punished when we try to be. Mothers should not fear for their daughters emotional and physical health because of the society we live in. Numbers of women who are unhappy with their body and have eating disorders are scary high. Media puts an unrealistic image in peoples minds: makes people judge people in real life much more harshly. Body types are all the same on television- again unrealistic representation. Women spend time and money on things they shouldn"t. Imagine the change in the world that could happen if al of that time and money was spent on things that matter. Political efficacy needs to rise in women.
