Document Summary

Gender is culturally determined, shaped and expressed. There are more than two categories for sex and gender everywhere. Pregnancy taboo: people in some societies can tell you what to do, people in the culture know that you"ve engaged in sex. Men"s work is usually more valued and paid better: public activities=male=powerful/prestige. Politics, working outside the home, business men: domestic activities=female=weak/no valued. Caregiving, cleaning, nurturing: individuals that don"t fit into our binary system are often valued in other cultures: warrior women, two spirits, hijras, everywhere does have some degree of gender stratification. Lovern cox: first trans actress, man that doesn"t fit into the definitive norm of a macho man, starts to change into a woman.
