Law vs. morals/ethics: not the same things, but do overlap. Ethical violations can lead to violation of the law. Justice: the theory that the law is blind. everyone is treated equal under it, people prepare, draft and advocate laws. Slavery, segregation, the holocaust all of that was legal at one point in time, but it was never ethical. Classi cation of laws: rights vs. duties. Rights abilities each of us have, with the help of the law, to tell a person to do or not do something to us. Duty obligation the law imposes on someone to comply with its law. You cannot have one without the other: substantive law vs. procedural law. Substantive law areas of law that de nes the rights and duties owed to us within that particular body of law: ex: contract law, property law, tort law, criminal law, constitutional law.
