Zeus had affair w semele daughter of cadmus. Hera got jealous, convinced semele to ask zeus if she could see him in full divine splendor. Semele was burnt to a crisp when she saw zeus. Sight of zeus was too much for any mortal to bare. Zeus rescued him (dionysus) and sewed him up into his thigh. Rescued dionysus saved him from the fire. Gave happiness to anyone who would worship and madness to anyone who. Thyrsos: staff decorated w ivy of vine leaves, pine cone on top. Silents: sometimes conflated w satyrs sometime older and more lecherous/ corrupt. Lived in the hills in mtns/ acadia. Pan fell in love w nymph echo. Spread panic among shepards died leaving only her voice. Echo met narcissus and could only repeat the last words of what people. Turned her down and she walks away in the mtns.
