Document Summary
Law enforcement is controlled by executive branch at 4 levels: municipal, county, state and federal. Little uniformity in practice, standards, training, etc in us law enforcement. About 50% agencies employ only 10 or less full time officers. Majority of chiefs appointed by mayors or city council. Basic training consists of going to municipal or state police academy. Goals: enforce laws, peacekeeping, crime prevention, providing services, protect civil rights & liberties. Amount of hours depends on amount of funding. In past, sheriffs were tax collectors, with salary based on gross amount of taxes collected. Alaska, hawaii and few other states do not have local sheriff offices. Over 200 dept on native american tribal lands. Jurisdiction can be with fed, state or tribal agencies depending on the crime. Indian self-determination & education assistance act of 1975- allows tribes to provide own police department. If tribal police need help, other agencies can step in (and vice versa) (called reciprocity)
