Had to make very difficult, tough decisions. One of our best presidents due to the decisions that he had to makes. Southern, segregated state: gi bill of rights of 1944. Granted wwii veterans low interest loans to attend college, start a business, buy a home, etc. Gave them access to money that they would not have without it. Elevated so many people into the middle class after the great depression. African american did not get the full benefit from this: unemployment act. Unsuccessful in getting the unemployment act passed: 1946-workers went on strike again. Earning the same wages that they were earning in 1942. With inflation, it was cutting back on their actual earning income: 1946-midterm elections. Republicans gained control of both the senate and house: 1947-taft hartley act was passed. Gave them the right to organize a union. So, no more unions: formed the committee on civil rights. Documented widespread civil rights cases and abuses.
