You may hear about slander four our purposes, libel is the same thing. Although there is a history is criminal libel we talk only about civil libel meaning an injured plaintiff is seeking money damages. Rememebr, we said the 1st amendment allows freedon of expression but not immunity if actual harm results. Libel is about accoutnability for false claims. To be libelous it must follow all six of these. As the elements indicate, libel centers on reputation . In commerce, politics and life, reputation (brand) has great value. Great effort is spent establishing goodwill, favorable views. Falsely injuring a good reputation results in loss of money and standing. Lying (falsity) is a faster, easier and more often anonymous. But pre-internet rules still apply for the most part, even though more challenging to enforce. I. e: online poker, sport bidding online, illegal to gamble in the us, so moved.
