Trial courts (law and equity) are called us district courts. Civil and criminal cases that involve federal matter. The first level of appeal (from all) is to the us circuit courts of appeal. Appeals may be filed with the us supreme court which will hear the case if 4 of the agree on a review. If the supreme court deems something legal, it then becomes the law of the land. Civil cases, equity cases, family law, divorces, etc. Not criminal charges, just disputes that need to be settled. There are 19 chancery districts and 49 chancellors. 1st level of appeal goes to the ms supreme court. If they don"t want it, it goes to the court of appeals. Most common in ms court, drug court. Except municipal judges which are appointed by city council. Plaintiff is a person who initiates a legal action. Defendant a person against whom a legal action is brought (aka respondent)
