Document Summary

The demise of the new deal coalition. Movement of southern whites to republican party. African americans became overwhelming democratic: whites left dem. Party because of racism" false ideal but made sense. Whites had always been conservative more so now (at that time) than ever. Reduction in party identifiers into 1980s but increase in party identifiers since then: more independent voters are coming out of the woods. No real third-party movement for some time, but the tea party movement and october 2000 midterm elections show that third parties are not dead: critical elections have a third party. Hasn"t happened since 1948: when parties go the each extreme (red goes far right blue goes far left), people stand in the middle the parties basis, but we don"t see this having an electoral candidate. Third parties are not properly or easily funded or advertised. Nominating candidates: open vs. closed primaries, nominating convention. Defining policy agendas: candidates express policies etc.
