Document Summary
Playwrights of 5th century bc: aescylus, sophocles, euripides, aristophanes. Medieval professions: shipwright, woodwright, wheelwright, playwright one who makes plays. Playwrighting as a profession: flat fee to sell a script to a company. Encourages bad playwrights: royalties- a fee for each performance. Continues to get money each time the script is used. Sneaky people will take the general ideas and rewrite. Had no children, no heir to pass down. Gave his play to london children"s hospital. Got all the royalties from the play. People can make knock offs of the novel. Can develop from original idea into something completely different. Writer takes to theater group, adjust, take to diff theater group, adjust, may never be the original idea. Many playwrights that work independently of a theatre or troupe construct plays in this model: improvasational. Do not know what the end will be. Built around a concept with an unknown result. Can be entertaining while addressing social issues.
