ATMO 336 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Heat Exhaustion, Hypothermia, Hyperthermia
Document Summary
Weather effects on the human body and clouds. For an object to warm, energy must be added. For an object to cool, energy must be removed. If energy in = energy out, temperature remains constant. If energy in > energy out, temperature increases. If energy in < energy out, temperature decreases. Energy transfer occurs between objects that are different temperatures, and the direction of energy is always from hot to cold. Three different mechanisms of energy transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection. Radiation is the transfer of energy through space or a material in the form of electromagnetic waves. All objects in the universe emit radiation energy. The amount emitted depends on the temperature of the object. If radiation energy absorbed is less than radiation energy emitted, temperature will go up, and vice versa. Explains much of the daily temperature changes on earth. Has a smaller influence on human comfort than energy exchanges due to conduction or convection.
