Precious object or person must be found, possessed, or married. Tests and trials for the hero that he must overcome. (cid:318)guardians of the object(cid:319) who test the hero. Human or animal helpers that o er the hero knowledge, magic, or other assistance. Jason quest to obtain the golden eece. Perseus quest to obtain the head of medusa and to rescue andromeda. Odysseus quest to return home a(cid:91)er the trojan war. Jason helped by the argonauts, hindered by the giant talos. Odysseus helped by circe, hindered by polyphemus. Circe: like many women on the hero"s journey, is both a helper and poten(cid:2210)al hinderer. Ex: chimera= goat, lion, snake; medusa= woman, wings, snake. Some helpers- especially the princesses- embody greek ideals. Penelope sets up a contest only odysseus can win.
