Year in which how people perceive the emperor changed drama(cid:2210)cally. (cid:318)new secret(cid:319): emperors can be made elsewhere then in rome. Empire seen as something that can be ruled on the basis of his managing to get military power/general populous/senate/ praetorian guards behind him. No longer have to grow up around imperial court. How emperors stayed in power became how people could claim power. Had troops acclaim them emperor then march back to rome. Galba: only leader of legions in part of spain. Friend of galba; betrayed him and got the guards to assassinate him and then took power. Support from commanders of syria and balkans. Pax and libertas: unlikely, though, that anyone thought this possible. Sent le(cid:130)ers to all of the legionary commanders; only galba took this up.
