~when i hear/read the word literacy i think of how well someone speaks. I think of the way something is written and how it is used correctly. It is the ability of reading and write. It is the comprehension of words and what you read, taking it into context and understanding what you read. Seeing where you stand as opposed to others when it comes to your ability to read and write. Literacy is the understanding and comprehension of symbols and being able to interpret symbols. Literacy is the best understood as a set of social practices. There are different literacies associated with different domains of life. Literacy practices are patterned by social institutions and power relationships, and some literacies are more dominant, visible, and influential than others. Literacy practices change and new ones are frequently added through processes of informal learning and sense making. (ie email & texting)
