A thick mass of ice that forms over land from the compaction and recrystallization of snow. Shows evidence of past or present flow. Part of both the hydrologic cycle and the rock cycle. Whether a glacier advances, retreats, or stays stationary depends on the glacial budget. Increase in wastage, or less snow accumulation=retreat. No matter what, ice i flowing forward. More snow falls each winter then melts each summer. All the snow from the previous winter melts along with some glacial ice. Higher elevations and then flow down/make channels. Have advanced and retreated many times due to climate change. Very disruptive if it rises for society. Scratches in the bottom rock by things that are sliding over it. The dominant flavor of energy received on earth by the sun is visible light, it passes through very easily through the atmosphere. Dominant flavor after is infrared light that gets absorbed in atmosphere and re-emitted.
