Archaeology is the study of the past through the objects that people left behind. Philology is the study of language through historical texts. Epigraphy/paleography is the study of scripture on stone and the study of ancient writing in general. History is the study of the past through writing. Art history is studying the past through art. Geology is especially helpful in the history of the middle east, as there are many fault lines along the area. Egyptology is helpful for making relations between different cultures, even though egypt was very ethnocentric. Materials sciences is a combination of all the different categories of science. Examine ancient artifacts to learn about the society. Hieroglyphs were primarily used for religious writing or for writing on stone. Were difficult to understand because symbols could have any number of meanings. Hieratic was used for more day to day writing. Neither were used in israel or juda for functional works.
