Urinary system Kidney • Urinary system is composed of kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra • Kidneys are retroperitoneal, bean shaped organs with a function in micturition (NH3 waste) • Balance electrolytes,pH • Blood pressure, vol, osmolality • Hormones (Renin, EPO) • 3 layers o Renal fascia (irregular CT) o Adipose capsule (adipose) o Renal Capsule (fibrous) • 3 Regions o Cortex (superficial, column extensions) o Medulla (deep, pyramids, papilla) o Sinus (space leading to hilum, calyces) Blood Supply to Kidney • Kidney takes blood and filters out urine • Arteries in: o Renal, segmental, interlobar, arcuate, interlobular • At the nephron: o Afferent arteriole, glomerulus, efferent arteriole, capillaries • Veins Out:
