Document Summary

Lecture 1 - types of neurons and regions, reticular theory and neuron doctrine. Each neuron is similar in terms of structure and function. In class, we will use these terms interchangeably: Neurophysiology = the study of the communication (electrical) among groups of neurons and how that communication underlies the processing of information. The nervous system is a continuous meshwork (e. g. net or reticulum) with one element in direct continuity to the next. It"s not a vascular meshwork, the diagram shows us the various elements that are continuous (there is no ending of one cell and beginning of another). Signals can move in any direction according to the diagram, but this is outdated since we know it typically follows just one direction of movement. There was no way of understanding the individual elements of the nervous system, until: Involved the use of silver nitrate on the tissue which allowed us to see individual elements of the nervous system.
